“2011 Outstanding Land Stewardship Award”

PRESS RELEASE

NWTF HONORS SHAWANO COUNTY MAN

The Wisconsin State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation recently presented Vernon Krolow, Jr., of Eland, the State Chapter’s “2011 Outstanding Land Stewardship” award at the Puchyan Longbeards Chapter banquet held in Ripon, WI.  Krolow received the local chapter’s “2010 Outstanding Land Stewardship” award the previous year.

Krolow has implemented many habitat enhancement projects on his 40 acres in Shawano County, which benefits many area wildlife species.  Sound forestry practices, wetland and grassland management plans provide ideal upland game bird and waterfowl habitat.  Turkeys, pheasants, doves and ducks abound on the property, in addition to deer and rabbits.

A variety of food plots ranging from corn, sorghum, clovers and buckwheat provides wildlife a strong fall and winter food source.  A mixture of conifers and hardwoods provide cover for wildlife in winter months, and the planting of several thousand pine and spruce trees will provide future habitat.  Coupled with the strong food plots over 300 soft and hard mast trees have been planted to augment a scattered red oak hard mast base throughout the property.  Varieties include red twig dogwood, flowering dogwood, American plum, American high bush cranberry, sergeant crabapple, red oak, white oak, apple trees and American hazelnut shrubs.

Mr. Krolow actively participates in many NWTF programs, Project HELP (Habitat Enhancement Land Program), Set-Out-Seedlings (S.O.S.) and the conservation seed program.  An avid outdoorsman and logger by profession, Mr. Krolow has always held a special reverence for the land.  This reverence provides a foundation for his business.  His forest management and land use policies verbalize this attitude and the logging practices and actions of Krolow Logging reflect it.  He continuously provides chapter members and clients information on wise land stewardship and on ways to improve wildlife habitat through sound conservation and forest management practices.

Mr. Krolow was selected for the prestigious award from over 123 NWTF chapters throughout the State of Wisconsin.  “The award is intended to recognize landowners who demonstrate a commitment to manage their land for wildlife, promote and engage in sound conservation practices of natural resources through good land stewardship.” stated Cory Catlin, NWTF Wisconsin State Chapter President.
