This was the second year that the Root River Longbeards was asked to help
financially and physically with a disabled pheasant hunt. Dale Hochhausen the DNR Warden for this area contacted us about helping this
year. We, as a chapter, donated $250.00 along with help at the event. It was held on April 5th at the
Halter Wildlife Area in Kenosha. Joel Chic, a local taxidermist in the area, helped start the event. Halter
Wildlife Area Hunt Club donated their grounds, buildings and members. We, along with other organizations, helped 30 hunters from the
Adaptive Sportsman Assoc have a great hunt day. There were two hundred pheasants
planted. We showed up as volunteers and helped them practice trap before we loaded them in four-wheelers and
gaters.
I met a young man there named Joe. He was at a wedding last year and dove over some friends on a pier and landed in only a foot and half of
water. He is now paralyzed from the neck down. I had to admire his adversity to come out and try and
hunt. We held his gun for him and his arm as he would shoot. We adapted a finger splint for his hand to give him more pull for the trigger.
He was able to shoot four pheasants that day after many shots. All in all it was a great event and it teaches us a lesson to live for today because tomorrow your life could change.
